Please share a memory of Joseph Rudolph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It’s with great sadness and fond memories that we announce the passing of our beloved Dad, Pépé and Grand-Pé, Joseph Rudolph Samson of Louisdale, formerly of Little Anse, at St. Anne’s Center Nursing Home on March 25, 2025, with his loved ones by his side. Born on May 14, 1935, he was the youngest of 12 children born to Freddie and Josephine Samson of Little Anse. He is survived by his only son Douglas, daughter-in-law Marcia, grandchildren Carlee(Jamie) of St. Peters and Taylor of Antigonish, his two great-grandchildren Daxon and Avery; his sister Betty Tandy, sisters-in-law Denice Samson, Amelia Martell, Liz Samson, Margaret Samson and Betty Boucher; two special nephews Ron and Wayne and a special niece Helen as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by the love of his life, Virginia, brothers William(Edith), George(Gertie), Henry, Lawrence(Mary Mae), Oswald, sisters Dorothy(Tommy), Delima(Harold), Alma(Ralph), Bernadette(Huey), Lorraine(Stan), in-laws Pat, Joseph, Anthony(Leona), Annette, Rennie. Rudolph was a man whose heart belonged entirely to the love of his life, Virginia, who he married at a young age and spent 65 wonderful years together. Their love story was one of mutual respect and unwavering devotion right until the very end. Together they raised their only son, pouring all their love, wisdom, and support into him. He was their world. Growing up in such a large family with so many siblings and challenging circumstances, Rudolph learned early on the power of humor. He was always the life of the party, a real jokester, who loved to make people laugh. His sense of humor was only rivaled by his generosity. He never hesitated to share what possessions he had or to take time out of his day at the drop of a hat to help others in need. Rudolph was also an avid hunter, traveling far and wide in pursuit of the prized deer, duck, or rabbit. Always coming home with a story to tell and something delicious to share. His home became a gathering place and was always buzzing with excitement. He could most often be found in the basement with his hunting and fishing buddies mending nets, building traps, or loading shells for his next adventure. Otherwise, he could be found at the kitchen table with family playing a game of cards and listening and singing to old country music. His house was where memories were made, and where friends could always count on a warm welcome and a cold drink. Though he could not swim a stroke, Rudolph spent almost all of his life on the water. Whether it be harpooning swordfish, setting nets or fishing lobsters, he was a true man of the sea. He was also known for his navigational skills. With nothing more than his watch and compass, he could navigate the most challenging waters; a true testament to his deep knowledge and respect for the ocean. Fishing was more than just a means to provide, but a lifelong passion he passed down to his family. Following his retirement, he moved to Louisdale to be closer to Doug, Marce & the girls. He spent most of his summers at the flea market where he loved chatting to all those who stopped by his table. He was a very serious card player - always up for a game of crib, peed, or 45s, and never missing a Friday night card play. He was always a man of strong faith - attending his weekly mass and making several bus trips to St. Anne de Beaupre where he worshiped and prayed for his family and friends. He always had a deep love for music and could often be heard yodeling or singing along to his favourite songs. In recent years, he looked forward to the weekly music sessions which brought much joy to his life and a tear to his eye. Rudolph leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and kindness. He will be deeply missed by his son, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and countless friends whose lives he touched. His spirit will live on in the memory of those who were fortunate enough to have known him. We would like to thank all the homecare workers who visited Dad at home and the wonderful staff at St. Ann’s Center for the great care and compassion shown to our Dad as well as Drs. Laurie and Scott MacNeil. Funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Church Petit De Grat at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 3rd, 2025 with Rev. Duaine Devereaux officiating. Burial at a later date in the Star of the Sea Cemetery Petit de Grat. Reception to follow at the Little Anse Social Action Center.
