Nellie Dolorosa Marchand Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Helen (Nellie) Marchand on June 6th, 2025 at the Maples in Antigonish.

Born the eldest daughter of Willoughby and Beatrice Gates of Halifax in August 1931. Nellie met the love of her life Rene when they both worked at a General Seafoods fish processing plant in Halifax in 1955, were married in 1956. Soon after “Little Rene” was born, they packed their belongings and moved to the quiet life of Petit de Grat, to live with Rene’s parents Charlie and Juliette Marchand in 1957. With Mom’s strong guiding hand and Catholic background, the children grew up with the newly adopted French Acadian heritage and neighbourly people of Petit de Grat. After their dream home was built on the “stretch” there was always a welcome for all visitors with Tea-Biscuits, Squares, and a cup of tea. She also treasured hot summer days at Pondville Beach with the kids, while Dad was up in the North West Territories working.

In later years, when the kids and grand children came home to visit, her eyes would light up and she always had warm hugs for everyone!

Mom’s upbeat personality was warm-hearted and always extended a hand to new acquaintances. Her final years were spent at the Maples Supportive Living facility in Antigonish Here, she had a constant daily routine of exercise, fun activities and mingling with new-found friends, multiple trips to town, not to mention a dash of “Pub Night” heaving back a beer and tirelessly jive dancing with aunt Joan (Who lived just down the hall from her).

All this, and STILL looking forward to trips to walk Pondville Beach.

Helen(Nellie) was predeceased by her parents and loving husband of 59 years, Rene Joseph of Petit de Grat. As well predeceased by brothers Freddy, Ronnie, Johnny, Billy. and sister Theresa.

She is survived by sisters Joan, and Annie. Also survived by Karyn Lake and Rene Gates, along with multiple nieces and nephews.

Mom will be greatly missed by children: Rene (Colleen), Tina(Brian), Richard (Lisa), and Connie Venedam.

Mémé will also be missed by grandchildren: Simone(Darren), Ross(Winnie), Solange(Sean), Ian(Sarah), Josee(Brad), Janelle(Jenna), Gilles(Caleigh).

Helen will also be missed by Great Grandchildren: Sophie, Luc, Barrett, Charlie, Kyden, Aeralynn, Zayden, Elliott, Serina, and Gabby.

Sincere thanks go out to Dr. Gallivan for tending to her medical needs over the years.

As well, a huge Thank You to the incredible management and staff of the Maples Supportive Living for all you’ve done for Mom!
