Obituary of Morton Harold McGrath
Please share a memory of Morton Harold to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with sadness we announce the death of Morton Harold McGrath, 98, of Louisdale, formerly of Arichat, NS. Mort passed away peacefully at Strait Richmond Hospital in Evanston, NS, July 16, 2025, with family by his side. Born December 10, 1926, in Cape Auget, NS, he was the son of the late Michael and Ethel (Edwards) McGrath.
Mort was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 150 Arichat. He enlisted in the army at the age of eighteen. He worked on the Lake Boats and then for the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission for 35 years until his retirement.
He was a true outdoorsman spending most free time fishing, hunting, and berry picking. He and his wife Mary often went camping and boating; most of the time with nieces and nephews in tow. Although they had no children of their own, Mort & Mary were surrogate parents to many. Their love, generosity, and kindness were immeasurable.
Mort loved spending time with family and friends. He was always up for a good game of cards and a late-night feed. He and Mary enjoyed watching hockey and baseball games and cheering on their favorite player Bobby Orr. They also enjoyed long drives to take in the sights.
He will be sadly missed by many family members including his sister Frances Samson, niece Lian Parsons, her husband Todd Parsons and their sons Bennett & Lindan Parsons. Nephews Dalton Sampson, Ross Sampson, & Aaron Sampson, Great nephews Nelson Kehoe & Nicholas Kehoe as well as many more nieces and nephews. Mort loved them all.
He was predeceased by his wife Mary (Keating) McGrath, brothers John and Dougie and sisters Edith Nickerson, Patricia Landry, Clythie Smith, Margaret Gerrior, Myra Bastable, Clara Theriault, Naioma Landry, Cora Keating, and Jean Benedict. Brother-in-law & Sister-in-law Dan & Beulah Sampson.
A special thank you from the family to the VON homecare staff as well as the Continuing Care nurses who visited Mort to share the community news, help him with his puzzles, and care for him with so much compassion. He loved all “His Girls”.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation per request. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Assumption Church, Arichat on September 20, 2025, at 11:00am with Rev. Duaine Devereaux officiating. Burial to follow in Our Lady of Assumption Parish Cemetery, Arichat. Following the burial, a reception will take place at the Royal Canadian Legion Br.150 in Arichat. Everyone is welcome to join.
