Leonard Joseph McDonald Obituary

McDONALD, Leonard Joseph – Louisdale

It is with deep sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Leonard Joseph McDonald of Louisdale, which occurred at home with his loving family by his side on July 21, 2025. Born on November 6, 1930, in Poulamon, he was the son of the late Charlie and Eva Jane (LeBlanc) McDonald.

Leonard was a man of deep faith. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Emily, for 58 years. A loving father to his three girls, whom he called his “Charlie’s Angels,” and a proud father-in-law to the three sons he never had. He was incredibly proud of his six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who were his pride and joy. Known to all as PAPA or POPS, if you had the privilege to know him, you loved him.

Leonard was always up for a good time and a good drink. He loved to dance, play cards, go to bingo, and spend time at the beach — an all-around outgoing guy and the life of the party. But most of all, he cherished his family and the time they spent together. A hard worker, Leonard was always willing to lend a hand, especially to his three “sons.” He worked at Stora Forest Industries for over 25 years.

Leonard is survived by his daughters, Janice (Terry) Marchand and Debbie (Gary) Samson, both of Louisdale, and Carol (Ron) Shute of Falmouth; grandchildren, Sherry (Donny), Ryan (Janeen), Chad (Mara), Holly (Todd), Amber (Jeremy), and Connor (Alisha); great-grandchildren, Ashlyn, Kyle, Ryker, Shealynn, Brielle, Teagan, and Della; sisters-in-law, Delores (Clem) and Eleanor (Adrian); and brother-in-law, Wilfred (Leona).

Besides his parents, Leonard was predeceased by the love of his life, Emily Mary; brothers, Francis (Phyllis), Steve (Lucille), Valma (Annie), Vernie (Priscilla), and Hubert (Eleanor); sisters, Sophie (John), Isabelle (Noel), and Hazel (Henry); and brother-in-law, Johnny (Delores).

The family would like to extend a heartfelt and sincere thank you to Dr. Paul Pluta, the palliative care team, EHS primary care, and all healthcare professionals who supported and cared for our Papa throughout his journey. A heartfelt thank you to Father Duncan for being with our Dad/Papa in his final moments and for leading the Rosary and funeral. Your prayers and support meant so much to our family. A special thank you to our family, friends near and far, and the community at large for the overwhelming generosity, support, and love shown during our time of grief. We are also deeply grateful to C.H. Boudreau Funeral Home for the care, compassion, and professionalism you provided during this difficult time.

Visitation will be held in the Glen Sampson Room in Louisdale on Friday, July 25, from 4 – 9 p.m.

A Funeral Mass to celebrate Leonard’s life will take place on Saturday, July 26, at 11 a.m. in St. Louis Church, Louisdale, with Rev. Duncan MacIsaac officiating. Burial to follow in St. Louis Parish Cemetery, Louisdale.

Memorial donations may be made to the Strait Richmond Palliative Care Society, the Canadian Cancer Society (NS), or a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to C.H. Boudreau Funeral Home Ltd., Arichat.
