Obituary of Mary Eleanor Sampson

Please share a memory of Mary Eleanor to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eleanor M. Sampson of Louisdale, NS at the age of 90 which occurred at the Strait Richmond Hospital on January 3, 2026. Born in Louisdale, she was the daughter of the late James Edward and Mary Alcina (Samson) Marchand. Eleanor loved being around people which was the reason why she so enjoyed waitressing. She began her career as a waitress at the Garden View restaurant in Halifax where she worked for several years and made many friends. When job opportunities arose, she moved back to her home community of Louisdale where she and Mickey worked side by side for the rest of their working days. She worked at the French Village Restaurant and at the Lone Shieling Motel before beginning her waitressing/managerial job at the Barachois Beverage Room, where she enjoyed the company of familiar faces and the convenience of being so close to work. Being back home brought her enormous joy because of the renewed connection with friends and family. Eleanor had a zest for life, her own sense of style, a contagious laugh and a wonderful sense of humor. She had a great memory for stories, dates, and family connections. If you wanted to know something about a person’s family, she had the answer. She rarely missed an opportunity to go to Bingo, a Saturday night card game with her card playing friends and family gatherings. Above all else, she cherished her time with family. She enjoyed her many gatherings and celebrations with family and her extended family, where she enjoyed great meals, chatting with everyone and of course, a good game(s) of cards. She was so appreciative of how her brother, Edward and nephew, Brian, were always there for her. Her greatest pride and joy were her children and grandchildren. She taught us that life is meant to be lived and that kindness and love are meant to be given freely. She will be fondly remembered for her humor, warmth, thoughtfulness, generosity and for the love she held for her family and friends. She is survived by her sons, Jerome, of Herring Cove and Godfrey (Renette) of Petit de Grat, her brother Edward (Lorraine) of Louisdale; sisters in law Shirley of Goodwood and Zelia (Ernie) of Dartmouth, and by her loving granddaughters Nicole Sampson (Kyle) of Antigonish and Andrée Boudreau (Drake) of Petit de Grat, her grandsons Cameron and Trevor(Julie) of Halifax, her great granddaughter, Layla and many nieces and nephews. Eleanor was predeceased by her beloved husband, Leonard (Mickey); her brother, Andrew Marchand (Martha); her parents in law, James and Ida Sampson; her brothers in law Tony Sampson, Tommy Sampson, and sisters in law, Theresa Rogers, Melvina Sampson (Wilfred), We would like to take this opportunity to thank her family physicians, Dr. James Collins and Dr. Angaye. We would also like to thank Dr. Steven DeRoche and the staff at the Strait Richmond Hospital for the exceptional care and support provided during her final days. Visitation will be held January 16th from 6:00 to 8:30 pm in the Glen Sampson Room, Louisdale. The funeral mass to celebrate Eleanor's life will be held on Saturday, January 17th at 11am in St. Louis Parish Church, Louisdale with Rev. Duncan D. MacIsaac officiating. Burial to follow in St. Louis Parish Cemetery. A reception will be held following the burial in St Louis Parish Hall, Louisdale.
