Please share a memory of Quinton (Kenny) Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Quinton “Kenny” Charles Martell March 31, 1939 – April 15, 2026 We are deeply saddened and heartbroken to announce the passing of Quinton “Kenny” Martell at his home in Rockdale, Nova Scotia. Born to the late Charles Amos Martell and Annie Mae (Mombourquette) Martell, Kenny developed a love of fishing at a young age alongside his father. It was there he mastered the skill of inshore fishing, a passion that would shape much of his life. He was also highly skilled with a power saw and worked diligently in the woodlands alongside his brother, Mickey. Throughout his life, Kenny tried his hand at a variety of professions. He worked as a labourer at the heavy water plant in Port Hawkesbury, as a heavy truck operator in Wreck Cove and in Newfoundland, and as a proud member of the ironworker's union – contributing to the construction of the Gulf Refinery Wharf in Point Tupper. Kenny’s greatest passion, however, was lobster fishing. He began fishing with his father before eventually venturing out on his own in Rockdale. He later relocated to Little Harbour, where he spent the majority of his fishing career—continuing to Captain well into his golden years until the age of 75. In 1988 his son, Paul, became his right-hand man, and Kenny took great pride in furthering the family tradition of fishing. This legacy continued with his grandson, Damian, who became the fourth-generation lobster fisherman in the family. In his younger years, Kenny was an avid baseball and hockey player and passed along his love of sports to his son. He was a lifelong fan of the Montreal Canadiens—a passion that, humorously, was not shared by his son. Nevertheless, he cherished the opportunity to travel with his son and grandson to attend live NHL games in Montreal. An outdoorsman at heart, Kenny loved hunting deer and rabbits. When he was no longer able to hunt, he still found happiness in taking drives through the countryside, searching for the elusive “big buck” alongside his son, his daughter Tania, his grandson, or his weekend cruising companion, Joseph Martell. Kenny found a sense of pride in his children and grandchildren, always quick to share the memories that shaped his life, his opinion on the world, and to offer his services as a driver, which did not often include a specific destination or many stops – even on the Cabot Trail. He found great joy in spending time with his granddaughter, Ava, listening to her stories and watching her grow into a wonderful young lady. Kenny will be lovingly remembered by many, including his wife Cynthia “Cindy” MacKenzie; sisters Valerie Fraser and Blanche Sampson; his son Paul (Lesa); his daughter Tania Martell-Mosher; his stepdaughter Amy (Geordy Bennett); his grandchildren, Damian Mosher (Maggie) and Ava Bennett; the mother of his children Gloria (Karsten Roren); as well as his in-laws, extended family, and friends who will miss him dearly. Kenny was predeceased by his brothers Gerard, Alexander “John”, and Frances “Mickey”, as well as his sisters Rita Gariety and Jane Martell. Kenny will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his deep connection to the sea and land, and, most importantly, his love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy of tradition, resilience, and quiet pride that will live on through generations. Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will take place on Friday, May 8th at the Holy Guardian Angels Parish in L'Ardoise at 11:00am with Rev. John Yake officiating. Committal to follow in the Holy Guardian Angels Parish Cemetery. A reception will follow at the L'Ardoise Community Centre. Family flowers only, please. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the L’Ardoise Volunteer Fire Department. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to C. H. Boudreau Funeral Home Ltd., in Arichat.
