POIRIER, Mary Helen, West Arichat It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of an incredible and deeply loved Mary Helen Poirier of West Arichat that occurred in the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home in Port Hawkesbury on February 20, 2024, with her loving family by her side. Born May 17, 1947, in River Bourgeois, she was the daughter of the late Alfred Abram and Charlotte Mary (Landry) LeBlanc. At an early age, Helen became a dependable caregiver, helping her husband take care of his mother. Helen was a wonderful wife, devoted mother, nanny, and great-nanny who loved being surrounded by family and friends. She loved her home, cooking and baking. She held several jobs, but her favorite was being a Party-lite representative, where she got to meet new people all over Cape Breton. Helen also gave back to her community and was awarded for her exceptional volunteer services in 1987. She had a strong passion for sewing and quilting. She was part of the Ocean Wave Quilting Society and the Busy Bee Quilting Group. Helen was known for her beautiful quilts that were purchased from those near and far. Her other passions were camping, playing cards, and traveling. In her later years, she enjoyed bingo, feeding the ducks, and going on small road trips with Bernie, Lori, or Aimee. Helen dearly missed by her loving husband of 57 years, Bernard Poirier; daughters Lori Forgeron (Gerald), West Arichat, and Aimee Kennedy, Queensville; sons Donald (Loretta), West Arichat, and Stephen (Cathy), Lower Sackville; grandchildren Kevin-Dane, Shawn, Caitlin, Jessica, Tonia, Joscillyn, Sarah and Melissa; step-grandchildren Lindsay, Joshua, Lacey and Vikki; great-grandchildren Aurora, and Lillian; step-great-grandchildren Tyler, Dominyk, Evan and Elizabeth; brothers Joe (Linda), Peter (Emily), Kenneth (Gloria), Gerald (Janet) all of River Bourgeois, David (Venice), Mt. Uniacke, Lloyd (Sheila), Wolfville, and Keith (Paula), Dartmouth; sisters Sharon Chilvers (Glyn), and Emily Arsenault, both of River Bourgeois, Susan Walker (Ron), Halifax, Gladys Parks, Dartmouth, and Darlene Martell (Darrell), L’Ardoise. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister Stella Doutaz. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Ruth Kehoe and the staff at the Port Hawkesbury nursing home for their tireless and compassionate care for Mom. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Helen’s life with take place on Sunday, March 3, 2024, in the Acadiaville Community Hall in West Arichat from 1 – 4 pm. The funeral will be held in St John the Baptist Church in River Bourgeois on Monday, March 4, 2024, at 11 am with Rev. John Yake officiating. Burial to follow in St John the Baptist Cemetery, River Bourgeois. Memorial donations can be made to the Pay It Forward – Angel Fund. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to C.H.
