We regret to announce the death of Shirley Ann Carpenter, who passed away on June 25, 2017 at the Strait Richmond Hospital in Evanston after a courageous battle with health issues. She was born to the late Alexander and Ida (Labrie) Poirier in Beverly, Massachusetts on July 8th, 1934. She graduated from St. Mary's School in Beverly, one of a class of 18 students. She married Robert J. Carpenter on June 5th, 1955 and resided in Beverly until 1969 when she and her family moved to Topsham, Maine. During her early years she was employed as a switchboard operator for New England Telephone. After moving to Maine, she was employed at Wright Pierce, Barnes & Wyman Engineering in Topsham, Maine, and also as a Switchboard Operator at Bowdoin College in Brunswick Maine. Beginning in the mid 1970's she became a self-taught Oil and Water Color Artist. She continued painting and subsequently became a very successful and sought-after art teacher. At her passing, her art is proudly owned and displayed in 5 countries around the world. She was a lifelong vacationer and summer resident of Poirierville and D'Escousse, Nova Scotia and operated an art gallery there called Hilltop Art Gallery. Prints of her work can still be seen in numerous gift shops throughout Cape Breton. She is survived by her loving husband Robert J. Carpenter of Topsham, Maine and D'Escousse, N.S.; son Robert A. Carpenter (Margaret) of Topsham, Maine; daughter Susan Carpenter of Westbrook, Maine; niece Claudine David of Louisdale, N.S. and many cousins. She will be eternally missed by all who loved and knew her. Her legacy and life as loving wife, mother, friend and teacher will live on in those she has left behind. Visitation will be held in C. H. Boudreau Funeral Home in Arichat on Tuesday, July 4th from 2-4 & 6-8pm. Mass of Christian Farewell will be celebrated at Our Lady of Assumption Church in Arichat on Wednesday, July 5th at 10am with Rev. Antolin Asur officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Hyacinth Cemetery Fund or to the charity of one's choice.
