One of the fondest memories of my early days is when Johnnie would come to visit. The time he took to connect spoke of the value he held for my mother, father, Aunt Meda and Uncle Arthur. Not many people could engage my father's attention, Johnnie could. He would talk and be talked to. He would take on my father whenever my father needed it. The subjects varied from the beaver that wouldn't, the deer that would, the politician that didn't or the axe-handle that was.
At the time I had a very saucy Siamese cat. I loved my cat, but like many things I was alone in my perspective. The cat was a bit cranky and untouchable. She also had this habit of eating holes in clothes. I don't know of anyone who liked my cat, not even Johnnie.
One day I came home from school and there was no greeting from my cat. My mother said, "Your cat got out and under Johnnie's truck. You won't see your cat again." (Maybe these were not the right words but what I do remember is that she did not want to talk about this more than she had to.) I was devastated. It was my first experience with the death of a pet. Instantly I felt the need to blame someone. Who? Of course it could not be Johnnie. He was just too nice. So, as the story goes, I focused on my mother. It was her fault for letting the cat out.
Later I learned that my mother was probably behind the demise of the vicious cat that I loved. Even today I suspect that she set me up to believe it was an accident and she knew that I could not be mad at Johnnie. Mothers are like that. They know how to get things done.
Johnnie acknowledged the death of my cat. He seemed remorseful at the time and I did not remember him expressing too much dislike for the cat. So, I believed he was sincere. But part of me wondered if he was in on it with my mother. Who killed the cat?
I never ever got Johnnie's side of the story. My mother has used the "bad memory" card whenever I brought the issue up. It remains a mystery to this day. At least for me.
The Johnnie I remember was not a cat killer (at least not of said cat) but a guy who came by and made the kitchen a fun place to be. He also was one inspired long walks for my father and projects that would get him moving.
Since the death of the cat I have learned an expression that I quite like: "What is in the cat is in the kittens". Delores and Johnnie have certainly given to their kittens some fine values that have made the world a better place. If among them there is a "cat killer" then the mystery is solved.
Sending our deepest sympathy to the Delores and the Matthew family on the loss of "John" may he rest in peace. He will be sadly missed .
