JOHNSON, Beverly Anne, Chapel Island It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Beverly Ann Johnson, 62 years old of Chapel Island which occurred at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish on January 9, 2024, with her loving family by her side. Born March 20, 1961, in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Mattie and Annie (Nevins) Johnson. Beverly was passionate about education. Every day was a new opportunity to learn. Over 40 years was dedicated to the Chapel Island community, and her love to teach. She received her BED at St. FX. Her specialty was in early childhood education, as one of the first Headstart teachers in Potlotek in 1980. Beverly was a strong advocate for the Mikmaq culture and revitalization, which led to her roles as Mik’maq teacher, aide, and researcher. She would also use her knowledge of natural medicine, in her everyday lifestyle, towards her ailments. Beverly was one of the first to start a woman’s drum group in Potlotek and taught so many to sing. Her coworkers and friends would describe her as game for anything and will be forever missed. She is survived by her daughter Naomi Matteaia Ann Johnson, grandchildren Blaze Todd, Aiden James, and Scarlett Jewel, all of Chapel Island; brothers Roderick (Lori) Johnson, Byron (Rosie) Johnson, Kevin Johnson, and Basil (Shara) Johnson; sisters Monica Young, and Nancy Isaac, all of Chapel Island. Godchildren Elizabeth, Crystal, Ryanne, Randi, and Tuma. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband Todd “Gubby” Gabriel Stevens; brothers Richard Johnson, Thomas Johnson, Bernard Johnson, and Lester Johnson, Sister-in-law Sandra Johnson, and John Johnson and Elizabeth Johnson, both in infancy. Visitation will be held at her home 123 Chapel Island Rd, on January 16th from 2 pm till Thursday, January 18th at 12 pm. A celebration of life will be held in the Immaculate Conception Church in Barra head on January 18th at 1 pm with Rev. John Yake officiating. Burial to be held at a later date. A Salite will be held following the Celebration of Life at the Community Centre in Potlotek. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to C.H. Boudreau Funeral Home Ltd., Arichat.
