He was a kind and pleasant human being. He will be sadly missed by all. It has been a very difficult few years for the family with his illness, but there is comfort in knowing that while we grieve here on earth, Allister is still smiling. Whenever we spoke with him, we always had wonderful conversations and he always enjoyed a good story or joke. Thanks for the memories, Allister. You will be missed. Don and Sonia

He was always pleasant and constructive and a real pleasure to work with. To his family, I send you my sincerest condolences. Steve Rison - past Chair of the Board of the CEN
I only heard the news of Allister's passing this afternoon (29 May). It saddened me to think that his incredible light has faded away. But not faded from my heart. And it never will. I first met Allister at a big "environmental" meeting convened by DFO and held at Mt. Tremblant in Quebec. I had only been with the Canadian Environmental Network a few years when I went to that meeting. I was focused on Fisheries and Oceans issues. I had a number on my information package and was assigned to a table. There were about 6 or 8 people at the table. Allister sat across from me. I live on the west coast of British Columbia. It seemed fitting to me that between us, the entire country was represented at that table. Fish were the all-important link for us. At the first break, Allister and I were the only ones who snuck outside for a quick smoke. We got to talking. I heard a soft-spoken, determined person, so knowledgeable and committed to his community. As I said, I was fairly new to this whole kind of exercise. It gave me hope that people not only from the east and west coasts of Canada, but First Nation and European descent, male and female, ostensible opposites, could connect so strongly and honestly on issues of equal importance to the both of us--fish, water, health, the "environment," all of it. Allister was a huge inspiration to me, and remained so for almost two decades... in fact, he still is and always will be. I am the same age as Allister was when he passed. Maybe we "older" environmentalists... and there's no doubt in my mind that he was one of the best, had (and I still have) the great hope that by working hard, dedicating ourselves to our goals, we could help to achieve the kinds of healthful--economically and environmentally--communities we both wanted to live in. The hope and the goals live on, as will my memories of Allister. I will always cherish my thoughts of him. Maggie Paquet, Port Alberni, BC. Currently acting chair of the Canadian Environmental Network, and always a friend to Allister.

It was a tough morning when I heard that Allister had passed away. I was talking to environmental advocates from across the country at the time that I was told the sad news. My prayers are with the family and friends who knew Allister more than I did.
