Pepa was one of the toughest, most salt-of-the-earth people I've ever known. He was never one to complain. I remember one day he and my dad were installing an attic door in our house, the kind where you pull the hatch open and the ladder unfolds. Pepa and Dad tackled these kinds of installations all the time, always successfully, without reading any of the instructions or safety precautions. The installation was almost complete. The final step was to stretch the spring for the hatch mechanism. Unexpectedly, the spring let go and parts went flying everywhere, including Pepa's finger onto the floor. He wrapped a rag over his knuckle, probably with some electrical tape to slow the bleeding and Dad rushed Pepa to the hospital, of course leaving the finger on the garage floor.
The next day, Pepa was back at the house, as always a big smile on this face. I said "Pepa! how's your finger? He replied "What finger?". I said "Well your finger Pepa, the one you lost yesterday!", "Ahh dat's nudding dere Papa, worry pas'd'sus.", "Well didn't it hurt Pepa?" He replied:"Well it hurt a little bit dere Pepa, but you gotta be tuff!"

I can remember when my brother Ryan and I were kids we would play on the hills behind PaPa's house. We would spend hours chasing eath other and hunting for frogs, worms, mice but most of all Power Puss! If we managed to be good, PaPa would take us around and around on the 4 wheeler. The course would zig and zag through the fields, climb up and down the hills and circle the Hall and the Church. These are a couple of memories I will keep close to my heart.
