Joseph Raymond Marchand, 88, Louisdale - It is with great sadness that we, his family, announce the passing of Raymond on May 7th 2011 at the Strait Richmond Hospital in Evanston, Nova Scotia, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Louisdale on September 27th,1922, Raymond was the son of Thomas and Sabine Rose (Samson) Marchand. Raymond graduated from Nova Scotia Teacher's College in Truro in 1942 and from St. Francis Xavier University in 1968. For 37 years, he served the students of Louisdale School as teacher and principal with true dedication and commitment. The importance of a good education was a big influence in Raymond's life and he was extremely proud of the fact that in his immediate family there are 10 St. F. X. University graduates wearing the renowned X ring. Raymond had a great love of reading, especially in the areas of history and politics. He would spend hours discussing these topics with anyone who shared these interests. For many years Raymond served as president of the Fleur De Lis Seniors Club and the Master Hunters Club, and was a member of the St. Louis Parish Senior Choir. Raymond loved to spend time outdoors tending to his flower beds and vegetable garden, as well as fishing, hunting, and bird watching. Raymond is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Dorothy (Jeffrey), daughter Judy Landry (Gerald), Sons Stanley (Paulette) and Marcel, all of Louisdale, Wade (Zelia), Fall River, and Lionel (Shirley) of Port Hawkesbury. Raymond was the admired and respected grandfather of Jean-Claude (Donna), Vanessa (Lenny), Alana, Dana, Nicholas, and Kayla. He was a very loving Gappy to great-grandchildren Joshua and Caleigh. Raymond is also survived by sisters Edna Boudreau and Anita Marchand of Louisdale, as well as many nieces and nephews. Raymond was predeceased by his parents, sisters Rose Marchand, Viola Furlong, and Evelyn McAdam, and brothers Eugene, Alphonse, and Bernard. We the family will never forget the influence our Dad had on our lives and we will strive to keep his love of education, reading, and nature a reality. Thank-you Dad for being the husband, father, Pepe, and Gappy that you were and for helping us become the people we are today. We will never forget you and will love you forever. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 10th, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in the Glen Sampson Room in Louisdale. Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 pm at the St. Louis Parish Church in Louisdale. Donations may be made to the Palliative Care Department of the Strait Richmond Hospital or the Glen Sampson Room Renovation Fund. The family would like to thank the following people for taking care of our Dad: Dr. Ben Boucher for his time and professional guidance, as well as the wonderful nursing staff at the Strait Richmond Hospital who were at his side faithfully, especially in his final moments, and who were so consoling in our time of need. We will never forget your caring and professionalism. Raymond's remains have been entrusted to C. H. Boudreau Funeral Home, Arichat.
