Hamnes (Boyd), Monica Mary – 56, Dartmouth, formerly of River Bourgeois, Cape Breton, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 15th, 2019 at the QE11 Halifax Infirmary, with her loving family by her side. Born in Sydney, NS, she was the daughter of Catherine Ann “Kay” (Sampson) Boyd and the late Fraser Boyd. Monica will be missed by the many friends and family of those lives she touched with her big heart, infectious personality and colorful vocabulary.  Monica was employed for 31 years, before her retirement in 2015, with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal.

Monica loved travelling, going for long drives, walks, visiting the beach and spending time with family and friends. She always looked forward to her girl weekends! She was a wonderful daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

Monica is survived by her best friend and husband, Helge Hamnes, Dartmouth (Norway), the light of her life, her son Jonathan Clarke (Deanna Bernard), Dartmouth, step children Patricia Thoms (Chris), Dartmouth; Tom Hamnes (Kristin) Molde, Norway and Lena Hamnes-Langeland (Henning), Oslo, Norway. Monica will be dearly missed by her loving sisters Brenda Boyd-Burke (Glenn), Lower Sackville and Judy Boyd (Cliff), Dartmouth. Sister-in-laws, Tina Boyd, Ship Harbour and Sigrunn Hamnes-Nilsen (Leif), Kabelvag, Norway. Grandchildren, Madison and Jordan Thoms, Dartmouth; Nohr and Max Hamnes and Goute Hamnes-Langeland, Norway. Aunt Monica will be missed by Corey Kelly, Christin, Megan Rutledge, Corey Burke, Megan Gillis, Matthew, Logan, her little princess Blaike and Norwegian Nieces, Sandra, Ida and Elin and Norwegian Nephew Geir Ola. Great-Nieces Jemma, Macy, Emma, Lotte, Tuva and Mari and Great Nephews Jarrett and Sigurd.  Special Aunt/Second Mom Josephine “Jo” Cavanagh and cousins, Judy Gordon, David Cavanagh (Olive) and Cathy Henderson (Herbie) all of New Glasgow. Several aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends. Pre-deceased by her only brother, Vernon.

Monica was always helping others, even at the time of her passing, she wanted to donate her organs, to help others. Monica had a short, but courageous battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia. Special thanks to the nurses and staff of 5.2 QE11 Halifax Infirmary.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 25th, 2019 from 2-9 pm in the River Bourgeois Community Resting Place in River Bourgeois. Mass of Christian Farewell to celebrate the life of Monica will be held Friday, April 26th, 2019 at 11am in St. John the Baptist Church, River Bourgeois with Father Antolin Asor officiating. Cremation to follow. Internment will take place in St. John the Baptist Parish Cemetery at a later date. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to C.H. Boudreau Funeral Home in Arichat.
