It is with deep sadness and broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Jacob Joseph Battiste in Potlotek on September 23rd at the age of 36 years. Born November 17, 1984 in Sydney, he was the son of Harriet Battiste, West Bay, and Benji Lafford, (His special Dad), Eskasoni, Joe Marshall (biological father), Sydney He was ‘Jake of all Trades’. Jacob attended and graduated from NSCC in Port Hawkesbury. He provided adult care to elderly relatives. He was a member of the Potlotek Fire Department. The best babysitter. He was a scared fire keeper. He was a ‘super Uncle’, avid bingo player with his uncle and aunts. Jacob enjoyed attending powwows, going for drives with his Uncle Boi. He was a best friend to all that knew him. Always had a helping hand. Everyone will miss his ‘Jake jokes’ and his ‘Oh Hello’ greetings. He is survived by his brothers, Stephen Lafford (Amanda Marshall), Benjamin S. Lafford , both of Potlotek, Joshua Marshall, Sydney; sisters, Mary Susan Lafford (Eddy Johnson) Potlotek, Madeline Battiste (Thommy Drolet), Halifax, Santana Battiste, Eskasoni, Meghan Marshall and Brittany Samspon, both of Sydney; God children, Jovita Prosper, Eskasoni, Shyla Mae Roberts, Potlotek; nieces and nephews who Jacob dearly loved and treated each and every one of them equal, Harmony, Jennifer, Zachary, Evelyn, Tyson, Linden, Casey and Parker; Lifelong best friends, Blayne Murray, Pauline Marshall and Charlene Googoo. He was predeceased by his brother, Allan Stewart Lafford. Since this obituary was written, Jacob’s sister Madeline Battiste, Halifax, passed away on September 26th. Visitation will be held today, Monday, September 27th at 4 PM until Wednesday, September 29th at 1:45 PM in the Blessed Ketari Tekakwitha Chapel, Potlotek from where a Celebration of Jacob’s life will be held at 2 PM with Rev. Duncan MacIsaac officiating. Burial to be held In the Immaculate Conception Parish Cemetery in Barra Head. A Salite will be held at the Potlotek Community Hall in Potlotek following the committal. Social distancing and protocols for Covid-19 will be enforced. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to C.H. Boudreau Funeral Home Ltd., Arichat.
